Tufts Health Plan Eyes Rhode Island Market
Tufts Health Plan — the Bay State’s third-largest health insurer — has filed plans to offer health insurance in the Rhode Island marketplace.
THP said Thursday that it filed an application to offer insurance in Rhode Island with the state’s Department of Business Regulations, which is similar to the Massachusetts Division of Insurance.
Tufts CEO James Roosevelt Jr. said in a statement that the insurer has been “actively exploring opportunities for growth” and believes “it is the right time to enter the Rhode Island market.”
Roosevelt said the insurer continues to conduct due diligence and is also pursuing efforts to build a provider network there.
Tufts, which had been on a membership decline, has rebounded over the last two years and now has more than 680,000 members. That growth has come in part through a national alliance with Cigna HealthCare.
